2012 Applications Now Open

YMCA Youth Parliament is preparing for its 26th consecutive year and it's time for those who want to make a difference to get involved.

For three days in July , the Members of Parliament will hand over the reins - and their desks to 120 young people aged 16-25, who will debate 20 pieces of proposed legislation.

Individuals aged 16-25 can be part of Youth Parliament by contacting their local YMCA, or downloading the application pack below.

Applications close Friday 30th March 2012. The 2012 Youth Parliament will be sitting on Monday 2nd, Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5 July, 9:00am - 4:00pm.

The 25th Youth Parliament

2011 was the 25th year of Youth Parliament.  The bills passed by the Youth Parliament were handed directly to the Minister for Youth Affairs, Ryan Smith.

One of the bills, The Increased Support For Non Primary Carers of People in Need Act, aimed to give legal recognition to carers of people with disabilities. Just six months after submitting the bill to the Baillieu government, it was passed and introduced as a Victorian law.

Youth Parliament provides young Victorians aged between 16 and 25 with the opportunity to "raise the roof of parliament" on the issues closest to their hearts.

The program provides young people with an opportunity to develop skills in relationship-building, team-work, public speaking, and leadership as well as to have fun.

Participants take part in a 9-day residential training program which culminates in them formally debating bills in the Victorian Parliamentary chambers in the second week of July.

The Victorian Youth Parliament program is run by YMCA Victoria in conjunction with the State Government's Office for Youth and is led by a volunteer Taskforce of 16 past participants, all under the age of 25.
