YMCA Heads Together
This three day camping program provides a unique social and recreational opportunity for families who have a child with an acquired brain injury. The whole family can attend the camp, which includes activities, adventures, group discussions and the opportunity to meet other families.
Heads Together is run by the YMCA, in consultation with clinicians/health care workers who specialise in paediatric acquired brain injuries.
Currently we hold two camps per year with a maximum of 80 participants. The program is growing in popularity, and more camps may be added in the future.
The aims of the camp:
- To share the experience of having a child with acquired brain injury with other families.
- Create new friendships and support networks.
- An event for the whole family to share in a safe, accepting, supportive environment.
- An opportunity for families to explore their strengths and weaknesses together.
- To expand the clinician and health care providers' awareness of the needs and concerns of families, and provide opportunities to observe a family-centred program.
- Increase awareness of acquired brain injury through volunteer opportunities, research and media coverage.
The Y is committed to building strong people of all abilities, and increases opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport and recreation, through its Access for All Abilities program (AAA).
