Beef up your career in the fitness industry

Deborah Pritchard (pictured) used to love working out at her local group fitness classes at the Eltham Leisure Centre - but that's all changed.
Now, she's leading the classes.
Deborah's story
When did you decide you wanted to work as a fitness trainer?
I had always thought about it since my teens, but really decided 2005.
What training that you did with the YMCA?
I did a Certificate III and IV in Fitness, and am currently studying for Fitness Training for Older People.
What did you like about it?
I realised how much more there was to learn about anatomy. I couldn't have learned so much if only training by myself.
How has this training helped your career?
Since early in 2007 I've been able to work at the Eltham Leisure Centre as a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer.
I also work in a Group Fitness class as a Les Mills Body Vibe instructor at the Macleod YMCA, and also at the Diamond Creek Community Centre.
My training has also allowed me to work at other Health Clubs.
What's the best thing about your career change/job?
I'm constantly learning. I find my work incredibly rewarding and satisfying, with never-ending possibilities. It's very demanding physically and mentally, however, I love it each and every day.
Would you recommend YMCA Fitness Training to other members?
Yes, definitely. It's comprehensive, well-structured and practical. The courses are run by professional teachers in a convenient location.
After completing my course I had the knowledge and confidence to join the industry.
